Bus Rapid Transit is not a new mode, rather it is an advancement of an existing mode: bus transport. Among the advancements that fall under the definition of BRT are: improved design of rolling stock; expansion of physical facilities such as exclusive lanes and bus shelters; and operational upgrades such as advanced signalization and Intelligent Transportation Systems. The goal of BRT is the achievement of service levels similar to rail transit at bus transport costs. BRT is also being utilized as a sustainability strategy for metropolitan areas seeking to reduce congestion and the negative environmental impacts of automobiles.
